About this deal

Architecture is exposed to life. If its body is sensitive enough, it can assume a quality that bears witness to the reality of past life.” The fragmentary nature of the book makes it hard to grab takeaways by the chapter because the chapters sort of jump and meld into one another. I tried my best to grab some themes that I found interesting, and reflect on my understanding of them.

In the recent book published by Barrons Educational Series, Inc. titled, Architectura, Elements of Architectural Style, with the distinguished architectural historian from Australia, Professor Miles Lewis, as general editor, the Zumthor’s Thermal Bath building at Vals is described as “a superb example of simple detailing that is used to create highly atmospheric spaces. The design contrasts cool, gray stone walls with the warmth of bronze railings, and light and water are employed to sculpt the spaces. The horizontal joints of the stonework mimic the horizontal lines of the water, and there is a subtle change in the texture of the stone at the waterline. Skylights inserted into narrow slots in the ceiling create a dramatic line of light that accentuates the fluidity of the water. Every detail of the building thus reinforces the importance of the bath on a variety of levels.” Zumthor mentions the term “presence” of the materials in his work. I remember reading 'Building, Thinking, and Dwelling' and try to grasp Heidegger's meaning of the bridge as the beginning of a 'presence'.CLIMAVORE: On Tidal Zones, Cooking Sections, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, 2015–. Some practices have been working in the area of neuroarchitecture, but there are also professionals who can specialize in consulting on projects by other architects. Let's get to know some:

Although design thinking is a methodical science, some see it only as a perceptual art. Understanding human psychology by studying their everyday needs augments design thinking in architecture. Moreover, it captures the full spectrum of innovation around a design intervention. Design thinking captures this innovation throughout its lifecycle of use.

Thus, the coalescence of the qualities of design, function, form and construction create a humble environment that holds incessant elegance and warmth, as long as there is a person to witness it. Architecture is concrete, it needs to be executed. To experience it means to touch, hear, see and smell. Architectural practice today goes far beyond the design and construction of buildings – the most exciting, forward-thinking architecture is also found in digital landscapes, art, apps, films, installations, and virtual reality. This remarkable book features projects – surprising, beautiful, outrageous, and sometimes even frightening - that break rules and shatter boundaries. In this timely book, the work of award-winning architects, designers, artists, photographers, writers, filmmakers, and researchers – all of whom synthesize and reflect our spatial environments – comes together for the first time. As mentioned above, to Zumthor , even if the finished work of architecture seems objective in nature, the architectural design process is highly subjective.

As architects, we are faced with the challenge of filling out the whole with innumerable details. Architects must look for rational construction solutions for the edges and joints where surfaces meet.
