This is another case of wanting what we see in Christianity – someone to talk to about our problems in life. Growing up in a Baptist church, the standard response was “go talk to the preacher and ask him to pray with you.” Mainline Protestant and UU ministers generally can provide some level of pastoral counseling, though they are not mental health professionals. Pagan Priest On Your Own - Patheos Becoming a Pagan Priest On Your Own - Patheos
Perhaps. But not likely. There are others like you – people who have heard the call of a deity and are doing their best to respond In the age of the Patriarchs the offering of sacrifices was the function of the father or head of the family (cf. Gen., viii, 20; xii, 7, etc.; Job, i, 5). But, even before Moses, there were also regular priests, who were not fathers of family (cf. Ex., xix, 22 sqq.). Hummelauer’s hypothesis (“Das vormosaische Priestertum in Israel”, Freiburg, 1899) that this pre-Mosaic priesthood was established by God Himself and made hereditary in the family of Manasses, but was subsequently abolished in punishment of the worship of the golden calf (cf. Ex., xxxii, 26 sqq.), can hardly be scientifically established (cf. Rev. bibl. internat., 1899, pp. 470 sqq.). In the Mosaic priesthood we must distinguish: priests, Levites, and high-priest. I am not in the position nor motivated to determine the veracity of those claiming this kind of Divine relationship, but over the last number of years more and more of them are appearing on-line. Since priesthood is hardly restricted to on-line fora, we can safely assume that there are even more priest-folk out there who don’t announce their work on the net. This growth is one of the most crucial developments in the Pagan community today. The establishment and maintenance of Divine cultus is one of the most, if not the most, important tasks for the Pagan community to survive and thrive. But I’ve done all these things in my service as a priest. I’m very good at a few of them. I’m adequate with most. A few I’m barely passable. But I do them all when needed because they need to be done and somebody’s got to do them. A purohit, on the other hand, performs rituals and saṃskāras (sacraments), yajnas (sacrifices) outside of the temple. There are special purohits who perform only funeral rites. Puabi of Ur was an Akkadian queen regnant or a priestess. In several other Sumerian city-states, the ruling governor or king was also a head priest with the rank of ensi, such as at Lagash.

Afterwards, we can have a rousing debate over the theological interpretation of what we all just did. This is the proper way to do religious warfare: in good company over delicious food and drink. We may not agree with each other, but we will have grown closer and perhaps learned a thing or two before going home. (You can see a nice form of this in Rudyard Kipling’s “ The Mother-Lodge”.)
